STUDENT NEWS

The 2009 Maryland ASID/Anne Arundel Community College Career Day on October 15 was a huge success. Over 60 students attending from five Maryland schools (Anne Arundel Community College, Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville, Carroll Community College, Harford Community College, Montgomery College) enjoyed a fun-filled day
mingling with fellow students, professionals & vendors, educational topics pertaining to "re-creating your niche during tough economic times", a vendor trade show and a panel discussion.

ASID Maryland President Elect Holly Frye-Atcherson assisted by Assistant Faculty Rep for AACC ASID Chapter, Janet Haddock, planned a busy day of learning and networking. The miserable morning rain held up some students and attendees but once everyone arrived the day was off to a quick start. Photographer Chrystopher Robinson was the first speaker of the day. He informed students about how to stage their work for photography, tips for photographing portfolio pieces, and his advice for getting started in this economy. The next speaker was
Christine Walti
. Christine is an instructor for UMUC and spoke about the benefits of assembling an e-portfolio and getting noticed by employers and colleges.

Lunch was provided during the vendor trade show in which representatives from Kravet, Bandicoot Trading, Ferguson, To the Trade, Fauxcus on Walls, Drapery Design & Manufacture, Inc. and Kitchen Encounters were present. Students mingled with one another, networked with professionals and vendors and learned about today's products and services available to the design industry. Door prizes were awarded and after lunch it was back to business with a panel discussion. Panel members included designer Paula Worthing of Portnoy/Levine Design Associates, home stager Lisa Bagbey of Space Lifts, Whitney Bordelaise of GL Contracting Inc, luxury antique dealer Nina Lanham of Lanham Hall Design, wholesale furniture and fabric showroom manager Dana Mebane of Bandicoot Trading Co., and kitchen designer Mark Wright of Kitchen Encounters. It was a very informative question and answer session for students. The panelists were very thorough and students enjoyed their candid advice for "re-creating your niche" during this economic downturn.

This year's attendance surpassed previous years and students went back to classes buzzing about how great the day was. They are already looking forward to next years event and numerous other schools expressed interest in hosting/planning the day. A special thanks to Professor Mike Ryan and Professor Dimi Tangires from the Architecture and Interior Design Department at AACC for their support of the event and to AACC ASID Board Members for their help in making the day a success.
